Specially bred as an ornamental fish, the Golden Tench is a very popular and more visible cousin of the well-known green variety. Often bought as bottom feeders for garden ponds, this specie also has a reputation as being a doctor fish. Tench are coated in an extraordinary layer of mucus which it is said they rub on to the bodies of other poorly fish. Tench are best kept in well planted ponds with plenty of oxygenators and water lilies and will happily live with all popular pond fish species including Goldfish and Koi.
